In Brussels, a study conducted over several years by researchers from the VUB and ULB highlighted how commonplace racism has become within the Brussels police, whether in jokes, routines or everyday practices. At the same time, young people, some of them minors, as well as students and teachers, were kettled, tear-gassed, beaten with batons and arrested during demonstrations against the education reform, prompting a wave of testimonies and images of police violence. Why does denial persist? What reforms are needed?
