City of Ghosts

Matthew Heineman

Festival des Libertes 2017:
FIDH special jury award

IFHR Honourable Mention: “IFHR would also like to give an honourable mention to City of Ghosts, a gripping documentary about the efforts of a group of brave citizen-journalists who create the platform Raqqa Is Being Slaughtered Silently, risking their lives to document the horrors of their daily lives under Isis rule. It’s a deadly game of cat and mouse, and even in exile, they aren’t safe. IFHR would like to salute the work of journalists and their essential role in democracy.”

In Raqqa, at the heart of the occupation and executions by the Islamic State, Syrian resistors risk their lives to meet in secret in order to tell the world their stories. The team on site, armed with mobile phones, sends images to outside teams who forward them and alert the public. “A camera is more powerful than a weapon”, and so the media war has started, since this adage is understood by ISIS itself. A film of hallucinatory power.
