In the context of an Italian political system consumed by corruption, Beppe Grillo’s Five Star Movement promised to send all politicians packing and give power back to the people. It won 25% of votes in the legislative elections of 2013. Ordinary citizens won seats in Parliament. Then they came up against the reality of exercising power, including that of their populist leader who resolved internal disputes by using polls on his blog.
