Often accused of perpetuating social inequality, schools nevertheless have a mission of ensuring equal opportunity for all. Is the Belgian school system keeping its promises to one and all? What about newly arrived foreign youth who are being herded into ‘gateway’ classes (DASPA system)? What do the difficulties encountered by teachers and pupils have to say about the effects of being held back and about the right to education for all?
