Guy BEDOS : Rideau !

France

Director : Roger Louret

It’s getting really hard to be on the Left. Especially when you’re not on the Right.

For 50 years now, Guy Bedos has been lying down on theatre and music hall stages. No offense to Freud, but this is his psychotherapy. He lets loose, swings away, rages and gets it all off his chest, in front of full houses that laugh and pay for just that: “I’m not going to put in twice the effort for a guy who doesn’t even laugh and who never applauds.” He’s never quieted down. He attacks, he destroys. Anything goes. His mother, women, kids, the world in all its states and all the states in the world. Sports, religion, political commitments, the Right at the head of the pack and the Left in retreat. Whether as serious clown or mad scientist, Bedos writes with an acid pen, he fumes and he despairs. He makes scandals and he makes imitators. He sets out the panicky fears seen on the news, which are less funny than he is: disease, terrorism, ignorance etc. He provokes movement, he wakes people up, he keeps them alert.

On stage, he’s like a wild beast. The claws are out. Bedos is mad as hell and he’s not going to take it anymore. He says it all without rambling. This is his last rant. His last show, his first goodbyes. “Curtain!”, he shouts. He says that after this he’s stopping. He’s going to open the flood gates, launch his last broadsides and every night try, finally, to leave it all on stage. To ward off death by laughing. And if it works, then he’ll start all over again.
