Hotel Modern

Dutch with french subtitles

A library that burns is like an old civilisation that dies out. When they start to attack culture, civilisation ends up on its deathbed. This is the starting point for SEAPLANE MOTHERSHIP, which deals with the journey of a spaceship on which a sample of civilisation sends a touching farewell to Earth when oxygen begins to run out.

Hotel Modern presents this apocalyptic illustration of human frailty and the devastation that threatens the world through a performance with multiple forms and styles: tragic short films, macabre photos, pop art, a live soundtrack, comic skits, an animated film shot live on stage with miniature decorations and figurines (the trademark of this Dutch company)... These visual and dramatic extravagances lead to a creation of unprecedented originality. In addressing a theme that is so sombre and sensitive, Hotel Modern sidesteps the traps of pathos and succeeds in making us smile despite the seriousness of the subject. Sometimes there’s nothing like the beauty of total destruction.

Idea and performance: Herman Helle, Pauline Kalker, Ruud van der Pluijm / Assistants: Mirijam Neve, Ineke Kruizinga, Dirk Vroemen, Stefan Gross, Marleen van der Lecq, Marije de Wit, Joost ten Hagen / Costumes: Barbara Witteveen / Technicians: André Goos, Joris van Oosterhout / Production: Egbert Davids
